Adult Sunday School Classes

Sunday school is also an integral part of the Worship and Spiritual Growth of our adult members. One does not need to
have an extensive knowledge of the Bible and Christianity to be a valuable member of the class. The more mature
members benefit from seeing the Bible through new eyes. Sunday school is the place to get to know other members and
is one of the primary groups in which member's share and care for one another. We offer a variety of classes, each with
its own unique approach in learning to understand the Scriptures and apply them to daily life. Brief class descriptions are
below. Choose one to visit on Sunday.

C.H. Byrd Class:This class combines lecture and discussion in Bible study.  A variety of curriculum materials are used, including but not limited to “Seasons of the Spirit” Lectionary Studies, video studies on a variety of subjects, and topical studies by James Moore and other authors.  Beginning September 2008, the Adult Bible Studies (based on the International Bible Lesson series) will be the curriculum for the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters.  The class has periodic social functions, as well as a retreat held each fall jointly with the JOY Class.  Special missions and outreach projects are taken by the class throughout the year, some on an ongoing basis (such as Shepherd’s Staff Ministries) and others as needs are presented.  The President of the class is Glenda Creasy, with Duane Long as Facilitator.  Robert Creasy and other class members also teach this class from time to time.

The Eagles Class (a.k.a. Snails Class): This class is a discussion group looking at the different levels of the message of the Gospel of Mathew – Jesus’ fulfillment of Old Testament prophesy, Jesus’ fulfillment as the promised Messiah and Jesus’ fulfillment of our lives today.  This class is seeking the full meaning of God’s Word for their lives through this study of the Gospel of Matthew.  Utilizing the discussion format, the layers of Matthew’s writing are peeled away in search of the story within the story and the truth application for today.  Unconstrained by the need to get through a certain number of lessons within a set period of time, the class chooses its pace, often spending two or three weeks delving into the full meaning of portions of the Scripture.  Although individual class members support a variety of mission’s projects, the class as a whole is active in Shepherd’s Staff Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets, Great Day of Caring and Vacation Bible School.  Members of the Eagles class include all adult age groups. Skip Matson is the class Facilitator.

The JOY Class (Jesus, Others, Yourself): The JOY Class discusses a wide variety of topics - from the Scripture to how we as Christians live together in today's world. Ages range from the 30's to the "young at heart". The teacher is Ralee Durden. .

The Navigators Class: :  Our mission is to reach, disciple, and equip people to know Jesus Christ and to pass on the faith through the pattern of our lives.  The study of the Word of God and application of its lessons in our lives is a basic principle of discussions.  Our class is a study in variety, as we have parents, singles, marrieds, divorced, remarrieds, empty nesters, parents of toddlers, and everything in between.  With this wealth of experience, all of our lives are examples to draw from.  Bob Mullis is our primary shepherd, and has the tremendous responsibility of reining us in when our discussions take on a life of their own.  Topics of study range from the church calendar, to in-depth Bible verse analysis, and Christian authors.  Current events, both in society and in our own circumstances, are discussed within the Christian perspective.  We do not shy away from the hard subjects, freely discussing pain, loss, and discouragement, while searching for the compassion of God to model in these circumstances.  We have social gatherings regularly during the year, and especially support the growth of the church by equipping and providing teachers for children’s Sunday School, VBS, and Praise Kids.

The Seekers Class: This class is SEEKING the application of God’s Word in our lives today.  Currently, the Seekers Class is studying about angels in the Bible using the study guide, Angels By Douglas Connelly.  The guide offers great discussion questions as well as life applications.  For the past year our group has been using the Life Guide Bible Study series and we are hoping to continue in the future with more studies from this series.
The Seekers Class leadership is shared by volunteers from our class members.  The format is basically a discussion group with the emphasis on using Biblical teaching to help us live as Christians in today’s world.  If you don’t have a Sunday School Class or are considering a new one please come and visit us.
The class President is Sherah Carr.

The Pathfinders Class: The class has three teachers/leaders that alternate - usually by the month.

We just finished studying the book of Acts. We are planning on doing James or some of the smaller books in the New Testament. Our group studies different parts of the Bible and then is led into discussions about how God's word is applicable to our lives now. We welcome all ages and currently they range from 29-55 years. The majority is probably in their 30's and has growing families.
